American artist based in Los Angeles and an architect by training who has collaborated for 3 years with the famous Frank Gehry, David O’Brien proposes work both colorful and poetic, marked by an omnipresence of geometric shapes and figures kaleidoscopic. Our entire selection in the future!
David O Brien was born in Washington D.C. and raised in rural southern Maryland. Empty shotgun casings and abandoned deer stands became toys and tree forts in the woods behind the house. David spent most of his childhood exploring the forest, working with rusty power tools in the garage and playing video games. Encouraged to pursue art at an early age by teachers, David was accepted into the VPA art program in eastern Maryland where students from several area high schools would attend a single art class for half of each school day.
David attended the Virginia Tech College of Architecture where he received several honors as an architecture student. However, deeper interests in art never faded. He was member of of the XYZ student run art gallery and the Studio Propulsid art collective. During this time he immersed himself in life drawing, and his architectural work took on a more abstract nature. Cosmological diagrams and figure drawings showing bone and muscle structure comprised most of his senior thesis project.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Architecture, David lived in New York and San Francisco before settling in Los Angeles. David worked for famed architect Frank Gehry for almost 3 years, learning the art of design with hand-built physical models before leaving to pursue his own career in fine art. O‘Brien‘s background in architecture is evident within his work, where abstract compositions seem to crystallize into patterns of mathematical rigidity, while seeming to flow with the serendipity of a constellation or school of fish. With an interest in cultivating intuition and freedom more than knowledge, O‘Brien strives to integrate his own highly personalized, hand crafted language with more universal forms and landscapes. From a distance, O‘Brien‘s patterns are expansive. Approaching his work, however, we experience an incremental shift in our perspective, as one pushed for light years through a wormhole to get a closer look at the world and our place in it.
